Keys you press turn red, and stay tinted once they've been tested. A few keys, such as Fn and some media keys, are handled by the keyboard or your operating system and can't be seen by any website. On a phone or tablet, connect a keyboard first. Tapping the keys on screen doesn't test anything.Using only a keyboard? Press Esc twice to leave the tester.
How to test your Russian keyboard
It takes about a minute. Use your physical keyboard: clicking the keys on screen doesn't test anything.
Press every key
Click the keyboard above, then press each key on your Russian keyboard. Working keys light up and stay tinted, and the counter shows your progress.
Check the special keys
Press ё, ъ, ы, э, the punctuation keys and your language switch shortcut. Try Shift and Alt Gr combinations as well, since many characters need them.
Match your keyboard
Choose Windows or Mac, and ISO if your keyboard has an extra key next to the left Shift, so the keyboard on screen matches yours.
About the Russian keyboard
Russian uses the Cyrillic alphabet and the standard ЙЦУКЕН layout. Each key carries a Cyrillic letter and a Latin letter, and you switch between them with Alt + Shift or the Windows key + Space.
The tester follows the physical key you press, so it shows whether the key itself works. The character that appears in a document depends on the layout selected in Windows or macOS. If the right key lights up but the wrong character appears, change your language setting. Our guide to the keyboard layout explains the standard rows and special keys.
The ЙЦУКЕН layout
The standard Russian keyboard is called ЙЦУКЕН, after the first six letters of its top row. Its 33 letters take up the 26 letter keys and the punctuation keys next to them:
- Top row: Й Ц У К Е Н Г Ш Щ З, then Х and Ъ on the two bracket keys.
- Middle row: Ф Ы В А П Р О Л Д, then Ж and Э on the semicolon and apostrophe keys.
- Bottom row: Я Ч С М И Т Ь, then Б and Ю on the comma and full stop keys.
- Ё is in the top-left corner, on the same key as the backtick on an English keyboard.
Russian keyboards are printed with both alphabets: Cyrillic in one colour or corner, Latin in the other. You switch between them in the operating system, not on the keyboard.
Punctuation on a Russian layout
The full stop and comma are where a lot of typing mistakes come from:
| Character | Russian layout |
|---|---|
| . | The key right of Ю (the / key on an English keyboard) |
| , | Shift + the same key |
| “ | Shift + 2 |
| № | Shift + 3 |
| ; | Shift + 4 |
| : | Shift + 6 |
| ? | Shift + 7 |
| / | Shift + \ |
Windows also has a Russian (Typewriter) layout, which swaps the number row so the punctuation marks are typed without Shift and the digits need it. Choose it only if your keyboard is printed that way.
Phonetic layouts for English keyboards
If your keyboard has no Cyrillic letters printed on it, a phonetic layout puts each Russian letter on the English key that sounds alike, so Д is on D and Л is on L. Windows includes Russian – Mnemonic and macOS includes Russian – Phonetic. They are easier to learn on an English keyboard, but they don’t match a Russian keyboard if you later switch to one.
On a Mac, also note the difference between the Russian and Russian – PC input sources. Russian – PC matches Windows and the keys printed on most keyboards. The plain Russian layout puts some punctuation and Ё on different keys.
Common Russian keyboard problems
You type “ghbdtn” instead of “привет”. The keyboard is on the English layout. Switch with Alt + Shift, Ctrl + Shift or the Windows key + Space. Retyping is the only fix, so check the language indicator in the taskbar before you type a long message.
The layout switches while you type. Alt + Shift and Ctrl + Shift are easy to press by accident with other shortcuts. You can change or turn off the hot key in Settings, under Time & language, Typing, Advanced keyboard settings, Input language hot keys.
Commas come out as question marks, or the full stop is missing. You may be using a phonetic or typewriter layout without knowing it. Check which Russian layout is selected next to the language name.
Ё doesn’t type. Ё is on the top-left key, which some compact keyboards move or remove. Many Russian writers type Е instead, which is accepted in everyday writing, but the tester shows whether the key itself works.
What to press in the tester
The on-screen keyboard above shows Cyrillic labels, matched to each physical key. Because keys are matched by position, every key lights up whether Windows is on Russian or English, so you can test the hardware first and fix the language setting afterwards. Press Ё, Х, Ъ, Ж, Э, Б, Ю and the full stop key, then check your switch shortcut in the typed text box.
Add the Russian keyboard to Windows or Mac
Install the layout once, then switch to it whenever you type in Russian.
On Windows
- Open Settings and go to Time & language, then Language & region.
- Click Add a language and install Russian. If Russian is already listed, open its options instead.
- Add the Russian keyboard layout.
- Switch between layouts with the Windows key + Space.
On a Mac
- Open System Settings and click Keyboard.
- Click Edit next to Input Sources.
- Press the plus button, choose Russian and click Add.
- Switch layouts from the menu bar or with Control + Space.
Fix common Russian keyboard problems
Most problems come from a wrong layout setting or a stuck key, and both are quick to fix.
Wrong characters appear
The wrong layout is active. Switch with the Windows key + Space, or Control + Space on a Mac, and remove layouts you don't use. Learn how keyboard layouts work.
A key does nothing
If it stays dark in the tester, clean around it and try our fixes for stuck keys. A full keyboard reset fixes many software problems.
Everything types in capitals
Your Caps Lock key may be stuck on. Tap it once, then check it in the tester above.
The keyboard keeps disconnecting
Replace the batteries, move closer to the computer and pair your wireless keyboard again.
Frequently asked questions
How do I test my Russian keyboard online?
Click the keyboard tester at the top of this page and press every key. Each working key lights up and stays tinted. Pay special attention to ё, ъ, ы, э, the punctuation keys and your language switch shortcut.
Why does my Russian keyboard type the wrong characters?
Your computer is using a different layout from the one printed on your keys. If the tester lights up the key you pressed, the keyboard itself is fine. Add the Russian layout in Windows or macOS and switch to it.
How do I switch between Russian and English?
On Windows, press the Windows key + Space to move through your layouts. On a Mac, press Control + Space or pick the layout from the input menu in the menu bar.
Is this Russian keyboard tester free and private?
Yes. It is free, needs no download and runs entirely in your browser, so nothing you type is saved or sent anywhere.
